Coal Mine Methane Assessment for Coalgas UK (Alkane)

Raven Ridge Resources provides a wide variety of services to its clients. The experience of our staff, together with that of our associates, enables us to undertake a wide variety of energy projects.  Our services include:

 Energy Resource Assessment

Raven Ridge Resources performs resource assessments and evaluations of energy prospects, including coalbed methane, tight gas, conventional natural gas, oil, and coal resources. We have extensive experience in surface and subsurface mapping and lithologic interpretation. Raven Ridge also has state-of-the-science analytical and modeling capabilities (see descriptions below). Our firm specializes in analyzing diverse types of data and presenting the results accurately and completely in an easily understood  format. Raven Ridge's services range from project design through operations management and beyond.

Oil and Gas Property Valuation and Reserves Certification

Raven Ridge Resources provides oil and gas property valuation and reserves certification for both conventional and unconventional gas projects as well as for all types of oil recovery processes from primary through tertiary recovery. Raven Ridge uses industry standard software for economic analysis. We also provide risk analysis using decision tree or Monte Carlo techniques.

Our registered Professional Engineer provides certified oil and gas reserves reports. These reports  follow guidelines established by the Society of Petroleum Engineers and World Petroleum Congress as well as the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission.

Modeling Methane Liberation in Underground Coal Mines

Projects to capture and utilize methane released from active and abandoned underground coal mines are becoming more attractive in the United States and abroad as the value of the gas increases and as the need to reduce green house gas emissions becomes more apparent. Raven Ridge Resources can provide reliable reserves estimates and production schedules for projects designed to capture this resource.  We use two sophisticated software packages to model methane liberation and migration in both active and abandoned coal mines. The programs are finite difference rock mechanics models and a customized version of a computational fluid dynamics  model.  Click here to see a step-by-step explanation of our approach to modeling methane liberation in active underground mines.

Abandoned Coal Mine Methane Services

We have extensive experience numerically modeling and forecasting methane recovery from abandoned coal mines using the PORFLOWTM simulator described above.  Modeling abandoned coal mine methane is different from conventional natural gas, or even coalbed methane, reservoir simulation in several respects. Raven Ridge Resources offers the following services relative to abandoned mine methane recovery projects:

  • Data Collection and Determination

  • Resource Determination

  • Project Specific Production Forecasting

  • Methane Reserves Determination and Categorization

  • Project Economic Analysis and Business Planning

Enhanced Recovery and Carbon Sequestration

One form of enhanced oil recovery involves pumping CO2 gas into the reservoir to push out the oil or natural gas.  In addition to increasing recovery of the resource, enhanced  oil recovery represents an opportunity to sequester carbon, thus preventing it from entering the atmosphere and contributing to global warming.  CO2 can also be used to recover coalbed methane.  Tests have shown that CO2 is roughly twice as adsorbing on coal as methane, giving it the potential to efficiently displace methane and remain sequestered in the coal seam.  CO2 recovery of coalbed methane has been demonstrated in field tests and more work is underway to optimize the process.

Raven Ridge Resources has the skills and expertise to undertake CO2 enhanced recovery and sequestration projects in both conventional oil and gas and coalbed methane reservoirs.  As a reservoir engineer with Chevron oil company, Ron Collings, now a Senior Engineer with Raven Ridge Resources, was responsible for reservoir management, characterization, modeling and flow simulation for a large CO2 enhanced oil recovery project.  He has also extensively researched the feasibility of enhanced recovery of methane from coalbeds through injection of CO2 and/or N2.

Raven Ridge Resources is currently investigating the potential for sequestering CO2 in abandoned underground coal mines. Some of these mines are located near electricity generating facilities that are large point sources of CO2 emissions. Thus, limited pipeline transport of the CO2 gas would be required. Development of an abandoned mine carbon sequestration project would entail both methane recovery and sequestration of CO2. Such projects integrate our expertise in geological characterization, reservoir engineering, mining engineering, and environmental science. They also incorporate our capabilities in the area of greenhouse gas offset credits, to maximize project profitability.

Analytical Testing Services

The following services are available to our U.S. and international clients.

Sorption Isotherms - Raven Ridge Resources has a state-of-the-science laboratory for performing sorption and desorption isotherms, real-time desorption rate testing, and desorption isobars. We specialize in designing tests to best simulate reservoir conditions or calibrate an existing reservoir model; this includes techniques such as use of whole core samples and substitution of reservoir water for distilled water in sample preparation.

Coalbed Methane Desorption Testing - Raven Ridge Resources has extensive experience in the utilization of whole core, coal cuttings, and sidewall core for desorption testing. We have modified the decline curve method for calculating lost gas. Our research indicates that this modified decline curve method, which uses the slope of the line produced when cumulative desorbed gas is plotted against elapsed time, is a superior technique for estimating lost gas.

Carbon Credit Trading

Raven Ridge Resources also possesses expertise in the emerging market for carbon credits related to green house gas (GHG) reductions. We specialize in documenting and marketing reductions related to methane utilization or destruction at active and abandoned coal mines. Our staff has the expertise to validate third party GHG reduction projects in the oil & gas or coal mining sectors for potential purchasers of those associated credits.

Project Planning and Management

Raven Ridge Resources has planned, budgeted and managed a wide variety of energy-related projects worldwide. In addition to technical analyses and feasibility studies, our staff has expertise in economic and financial analysis that contributes to our ability to evaluate the viability of energy projects.

Drilling Program Management

The experience of our staff, together with that of our associates, enables us to undertake a wide variety of energy projects. We provide high quality wellsite supervision, design drilling, completion, and production programs for recovery of coalbed methane and other hydrocarbons.  We offer a full spectrum of drilling program services, from location staking and well design through completions and the development of gas gathering and water disposal systems.

Conference and Workshop Planning and Organization

Raven Ridge Resources has played a key role in planning, organizing, and/or chairing numerous coalbed and coal mine methane conferences, symposia and workshops in the U.S. and internationally.  Both government organizations such as U.S. EPA and private companies such as the Strategic Research Institute have relied on our technical expertise and communications skills to facilitate a wide range of conferences and workshops. Our responsibilities have included planning agendas, selecting speakers, compiling and maintaining databases of contacts, preparing and disseminating announcements, preparing instructional materials, reviewing abstracts and papers, and conducting or chairing conferences.

Raven Ridge Resources' efforts have helped ensure the success of many coalbed methane conferences and workshops. Recent examples include the 2nd International Methane Mitigation Conference in Novosibirsk (prepared detailed announcement/agenda booklet), the 2001 Strategic Research Institute Coalbed and Coal Mine Methane Conferences in Denver and Annapolis (chaired and helped plan), and the 2001 CMM/CBM International Investment and Technology Symposium/Expo in Shanghai (identified invitees, prepared web site, announcements and mailings, processed registrations, and served as U.S. contact for registrants).
